Sleep Apnea Solutions

!±8± Sleep Apnea Solutions

Sleep apnea is a form of sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Of the three types of sleep apnea, obstructive, which causes the airway to partially or fully collapse, is the most common, affecting over 18 million Americans. Consequences of sleep apnea can be life threatening, including hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Sleep apnea solutions very, depending on the severity of the disorder and on the patient's medical history.

Ranging from lifestyle changes to surgery, sleep apnea solutions also have a range of effects. Simple changes such as using a humidifier during sleep, clearing the nasal passages of congestion before going to bed, and avoiding sleeping on the back can alleviate sleep apnea. Hypnosis, natural herbs, acupuncture have also been suggested as possible sleep apnea solutions. Breaking bad habits, such as overeating, imbibing too much alcohol and smoking can have an impact, too.

In some cases, the simple sleep apnea solutions do not completely relieve the problem. Oral appliances, devices similar to mouth guards used in sports, keep the airway open. A mandibular advancement device (MAD) pushes the lower jaw forward. A tongue-retaining device prevents the tongue from falling back over the airway. The MAD is often adjustable so that the dentist can adjust the jaw as necessary.

Pressurized air is another of the sleep apnea solutions. Via a medical pump through a flexible tube attached to a mask, a stream of pressured air is pumped into the subject's mouth, keeping the airway open. CPAP, continuous positive air pressure, is most commonly used and comes with a variety of attachments, including humidifier, variable inhalation and exhalation air pressures, and an air heater.

The object of treating obstructive sleep apnea is to relieve/remove the cause of obstruction, so several sleep apnea solutions include procedures to widen the airway. One such solution is tissue reduction. With the use of a needle connected to a radio frequency generator, RFTR (Radiofrequency Tissue Reduction) can reduce the inner thickness of tissue on the tongue, on the soft palate and on the throat. Reducing the tongue size aids in two ways: more room in the airway, and less tissue capable of creating a blockage.

Surgical procedures as sleep apnea solutions are usually reserved as a last resort. Most of the procedures are designed to help open/widen the airway. Uvulopalatoplasty, shrinking or removing the uvula (that bit of tissue that dangles from the roof of your mouth), is an example. For sleep apnea complicated by nasal congestion, surgery to straighten the septum (the partition between the nostrils) may be an option. Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy can also be effective.

Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA), usually performed for the most difficult cases, is the most invasive of sleep apnea solutions. MMA involves detaching the upper and lower jaw, moving them forward and reattaching them with pins or plates.

Sleep apnea is a chronic disorder and may require a lifetime of treatment. Research is continuing on all avenues of sleep apnea solutions, and as technology advances, so do possible solutions.

Sleep Apnea - Healing Is Possible

!±8± Sleep Apnea - Healing Is Possible

Recently several people have contacted me with symptoms diagnosed by a medical doctor as 'Sleep Apnea.' After many months of treatment, they each began seeking a more effective approach. While they did not know what they were searching for, each accessed hypnosis treatment as a possible modality. Thus, after treating several 'sleep deprived' sufferers with success - it is my fiduciary responsibility to inform Sleep Apnea sufferers - healing is possible.

Forty million Americans reportedly have a sleeping disorder, yet, fewer than three percent are treated with 100% success. While many people receive Traditional Western Medical (TWM) treatment, the issues that TWM believes causes problems with sleeping are only the most easily proven - restricted air passages - other possibilities are ignored.

Sleep Apnea is diagnosed by TWM as a blocked or partly blocked breathing capacity during sleep. The problem is further labeled as mild or severe, based on how often the brain is oxygen deprived. Being oxygen deprived may occur from five or more than fifty times an hour.

TWM believes sleeping disturbance is caused by blocked or narrow airways in the nose, mouth or throat. The airway can become blocked when the throat muscles and tongue relax during sleep. Sleep disturbance can also occur if one has large tonsils, adenoids or uvula. During the day the air passage is open when the person is standing or sitting up. However, when the person lies down the airway is believed to narrow due to pressure within the nose, mouth or throat. Furthermore, being overweight contributes to Sleep Apnea, use of some medications or alcohol before bedtime.

The most frequent symptoms of Adult Sleep Disturbance are:

• Not feeling rested after a night's sleep.
• Feeling sleepy during the day.
• Waking up with a headache.
• Your partner may notice that while you sleep:
• You stop breathing.
• You often snore loudly.
• You gasp or choke.
• You toss and turn.

The most frequent symptoms of Children's Sleep Disturbance are:

• Nearly always snore.
• May be hyperactive or problems paying attention.
• May be restless during sleep and wake up often.
• May have bed-wetting.
• Less apt to notice sleepiness during the day
• Some children seem to grow slower than average

The double edged sword with Sleep Disturnbance is which came first 'the chicken or the egg.' The symptoms attributed to constricted airways in the nose, mouth or throat can all be caused by Post Traumatic Stress - Emotional, Physical and/or Sexual Child Abuse or Post Traumatic Stress due to domestic violence, war related experiences, natural disasters and other traumatic experiences.

Treatment:

• Lose and/or maintain standard BMI weight
• Sleep on your side - Avoid sleep on your back
• Avoid alcohol and medicines (especially sedatives) before bed time

If lifestyle changes fail to relieve Sleep Disturbance, your TWM doctor will recommend a machine that helps you breathe while sleeping. This machine supplies 'continuous positive airway pressure,' (CPAP). While this strategy brings better quality of sleep; it becomes a life long strategy for the majority of Sleep Apnea suffers rather than a healing remedy.

Sleep Apnea Masks - Why Use the Full Face Sleep Apnea Mask

!±8± Sleep Apnea Masks - Why Use the Full Face Sleep Apnea Mask

If you have sleep apnea, you are probably familiar with sleep apnea masks. You are also probably aware that, although the disease itself is not fatal, it can greatly increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Currently there is no cure for sleep apnea, but the treatment is relatively benign. The only truly effective treatment for sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. A CPAP machine works by forcing air through a tube and mask into your lungs, effectively keeping your airway open and allowing you to breathe normally.

The main thing that people have an issue with is the mask itself. Making sure that the facial mask fits well and meets your needs will go a long way to ensuring that you will actually use your mask. Here are three reasons to consider using a full face mask:

1.    Mouth Breathing. This is the only mask that works for mouth breathers is a mask that covers your nose and mouth. If you wear a nasal mask and are a mouth breather, then you will not be breathing in pressurized air, and your air passage will collapse upon itself, just as if you weren't using a CPAP machine.

2.    Sinus or Allergy Sufferer. If you suffer from nasal blockages you might want to consider a full face mask. This allows you the ability to sleep with your mouth open, even if you do this unwittingly.

3.    Weak Jaw. If you have a weak jaw, your mouth is likely to drop open when you are sleeping. This can result in mouth breathing (see 1) or not. If you are not breathing through your mouth an open mouth is still a problem as the pressurized air will flow out of your mouth, instead of keeping your airway open.

Which of the sleep apnea masks should you use? If the three instances above are appropriate to you, then you are a good candidate for the full face mask variety of the sleep apnea mask.
